Lock nuts are used to secure bearings onto a shaft. They also serve in mounting bearings with a tapered bore onto tapered shaft seats or adapter sleeves, and in removing bearings from withdrawal sleeves. Beyond bearing applications, lock nuts are commonly used to fasten gears, belt pulleys, and other machine parts in place.

To prevent accidental loosening, lock nuts must be secured using either:

* A locking device that fits into a shaft keyway or an adapter sleeve slot, or

* An integrated locking mechanism built into the nut itself.

SKF lock nuts offer several securing options and are available in standard types as part of the core SKF range. Other locking configurations can be provided upon request.

SKF offers two main types:
* Industrial lock nuts
** With keyway
** With integrated locking mechanism

* Precision lock nuts
** All with integrated locking

Lock nuts with built-in locking mechanisms offer the advantage of eliminating the need for shaft keyways, reducing machining costs and simplifying installation. However, these nuts may require special attention regarding their loosening torque. For detailed information, refer to the product data for each lock nut series.
